RASH3

RASH3 is a mobile platform that can be used for creation of fully-featured robotized systems designed for learning and acquiring skills of electronics development.

Discovering a new dimension of the world

htmlimage (1) In November of 2016 Endurance starts developing a Rash 3 on the basis of the programmable logic device FPGA Altera/Xilinx.

What is FPGA?

htmlimage (2) A programmable logic device (PLD) is an electronic component used for creation of digital devices. Unlike conventional digital circuits, the FPGA operation logic is set by means of programming (designing). A programmer and IDE (a debugging environment), allowing to set the desired structure of the digital device in the form of a schematic or a program in special hardware description languages: Verilog, VHDL, AHDL and others, are used. A RASH3 is
  • solid metallic chassis with a high clearance;
  • 4 independent motors (4 wheel-drive);
  • autonomous power supply on the basis of lithium batteries;
  • autonomous control board ensuring;
  • electronic control of the platform power supply;
  • path monitoring in the direction of the platform motion and automatic collision avoidance (if infrared or ultrasonic distance sensors are installed);
  • implementation of the platform management protocol based on the UART interface.
  • Key Features of the Robot

    The robot is able to move indoors and outdoors, controlled by an operator with the help of a phone or tablet via Bluetooth and WiFi. One of the specific features of the robot is an option to direct its movement by means of head pointing command. With the right turn of the head the operator directs the robot to the right, while the left turn of the head directs the robot to the left. Google API for Android provides this feature. The platform is multifunctional and can be used for autopilot testing (if a Lidar, sonars and IR sensors are installed). Using this platform, it is also possible to create am app. with Augmented reality, but the main feature is the facility to install a robotic arm, which makes the platform suitable for scientific research and practical work (for example, as a mini robot-loader). An important aspect is a large number of fasteners available on a wheel platform, which allows modifying and upgrading the frame by means of 3D printing of certain details.

    The RASH3 platform can have electronics on a mictrocontroller basis (Arduino), which has been implemented by now, or on the basis of a programmable logic device (FPGA).

    The Use of FPGA allows

    getting the idea of the FPGA operation principles
  • getting to know the languages of low-level programming HDL (VHDL/Verilog);
  • familiarization with the process of developing, creating, designing, and testing programs for FPGA.
  • FPGA microelectronic chips are used in military and aerospace fields, in reliable industrial systems, in telecommunications and high-speed digital signal processing.
    Creation of a Rash 3 robot based on FPGA is low-level electronics development. This sophisticated level ensures quick and simultaneous execution of multiple operations, and organizes productive and flexible data processing. Development in VHDL is a new level of control that fundamentally differs from microcontrollers programming. The principal difference of a FPGA-based system is simultaneous, high speed (within a few clock periods, that is, literally, a few tens of nanoseconds) signals processing, performing computations, while operations in Arduino microcontroller-based systems are carried out sequentially.

    Advantages

    Genericity. Change of a microcontroller model requires a detailed study of the documentation. While developing anything on FPGA it is enough to know Verilog or VHDL to program any FPGA. Development of a RASH3 on FPGA will allow a novice developer to understand how and why microelectronic chips work! The RASH3 on FPGA will be a completely open-source solution available to all developers.

    9 For the last two weeks of December, I was a participant in Crew 145 for the Mars Society. The Mars Society works with entities like NASA and the Musk Foundation to prepare people for long-duration space missions, and to find and solve problems that might arise in such missions before they become dangerous. To this end, they have built two Mars simulation habitats, one in the cold desert of Utah and one in the Canadian arctic. They are building a third one in Iceland. The simulation goes on 24/7 for two or four weeks (the Arctic habitat will host a year-long simulation next year). TheMars Desert Research Station is a cylinder-shaped structure intended to simulate a Martian lander, and can accommodate up to seven analog astronauts. Next to the structure is a greenhouse, which is currently being replaced with a semi-buried structure that is more accurate to what astronauts are expected to build on the real mission, and a small self-contained observatory. Food, water, electricity and bandwidth are rationed, with internet communications with “home base” being subject to a speed-of-light delay that varies between 6 and 20 minutes. Our rotation was relatively cushy, with 90 seconds of water per day for a shower – to be split between four crewmembers! The crew is given various problems to solve as outlined by each crew’s mission plan, plus of course the occasional issue that arises out of simulation like our water pump breaking and requiring replacement and, at one point, “McGyvering” a hand pump that could be operated with a spacesuit on. Technology is advancing at rapid rates, thanks to increasing capabilities of computers, the ability to share knowledge via the internet, and the growing adoption rate of robotic driven technologies such as 3D printing. The culmination of these advancements has led to exploration outside of the Earth’s atmosphere. This idea has led a group of researchers at MarsWithoutBorders (MWOB) to begin testing the feasibility of 3D printing surgical tools for telesurgery on Mars. The project, led by the Founder of MWOB, and Commander of MWOB Expedition One Crew 145, Susan Ip Jewell, MD, and MWOB Crew Engineer, Matteo K. Borri took place in a Mars Analog Simulation at Mars Desert Research Station situated in a remote desert location in Utah. (далее…)

    UAV, which are also called drones, are getting more popular now with every passing day. The fields of their application are very wide. As they can reach sites inaccessible or dangerous for people they are extremely useful for environmental monitoring and wildlife research. Due to easy deployment, drones become a powerful tool in the search and rescue mission, particularly in harsh conditions. In a place of natural or manmade disaster, drones provide a quick means to gather information, navigate debris with a portable and useful technology that doesn’t drown out cries for help and can be deployed by rescuing teams. With thermal sensors, drones can quickly discover the location of lost persons, and are particularly useful at night or in challenging terrain. Carrying mapping cameras, UAV successfully do aerial photographic survey. Aerial photography is helpful for monitoring from above of construction project sites providing 3D modeling. (далее…)

    Now we work at the problem how to improve the Endurance telepresence robots and make them the best. A telepresence robot is a kind of a tablet on wheels. It gives and opportunity to communicate with other people remotely. It can be used, for example, by parents who would like to talk with their kids when they are away from home. It can also help your business partners from Japan to be present at your meeting. And your clients will find it useful if it allows them to visit your company remotely. In short, see it with your own eyes: (далее…)

    13If you already have a 3D printer, you already have a machine that will trace out gears, cogs, and enclosures over an XY plane. How about strapping a laser to your extruder and turning your printer into a laser cutter? That’s what [Spiritplumber] did, and he’s actually cutting 3/16″ wood and 1/4″ acrylic with his 3D printer. [Spiritplumber] is using a 445nm laser diode attached directly to his extruder mount to turn his 3D printer into a laser cutter. The great thing about putting a laser diode on an extruder is that no additional power supplies are needed; after installing a few connectors near the hot end, [Spiritplumber] is able to switch from extruding to lasing by just swapping a few wires. The software isn’t a problem either: it’s all just Gcode and DXFs, anyway. There’s an Indiegogo for this, with the laser available for $200. Compare that to the Chinese laser cutters on eBay, and you can see why this is called the L-CHEAPO laser cutter.

    Telepresence robot Why do we think the telepresence robot will take off? The telepresence market is already a real thing. We are sure that our idea is new and nobel (advanced, progressive?) to make a great communication tool. The ability to move while speaking opens enormous possibilities. The perfect sound and video of a person you are talking to gives you really a magic feeling. We enjoy what we do. We strive to bring robots to every business, to every family. Everybody knows that a fixed video camera and skype in a PC or notebook sometimes cannot solve one’s problem. (далее…)
